Keeping It Cool & Changing Lives

July is coming in hot... like, really hot.
Happy Fourth of July from all of us at the New Hampshire Humane Society!
We're wrapping up June with 84 adoptions, 108 low-cost spay and neuter surgeries, and 341 volunteer hours from our incredible volunteers. Thank you to everyone who helped make this month such a success.
June was a busy one! We hosted our first low-cost vaccine and microchip clinic at the shelter, welcomed families to a fun adoption event, and celebrated our 6th Annual Compassion Golf Tournament at Laconia Country Club with more than 100 golfers supporting our mission.
As we head into the long holiday weekend with soaring temperatures, here's your friendly reminder to keep your pets cool. If you're a dog parent, aim for walks early in the morning or after the sun goes down, and be sure to keep plenty of fresh water available. For our feline friends, make sure they have a cool, quiet place to relax and stay hydrated.
When it's this hot, the name of the game is taking it easy. The adventure can always wait until tomorrow.
How One "Yes" Changed a Life
If you've been following along, you've probably heard us talk about our National Rescue Project. If not, here's the quick version.
Our National Rescue Project partners with organizations across the country to give cats and dogs from overcrowded shelters a second chance here in New England. Every transport helps ease overcrowding, creates space for more animals in need, and gives deserving pets the opportunity to find loving homes.
Now for one of our favorite stories.
Back in March, we had a transport scheduled to arrive. The volunteer was lined up, the kennels were ready... and then animal welfare reminded us that plans don't always go according to plan.
At 5 p.m. the night before the transport, our volunteer had a work emergency. Bad weather forced the transport to change course, and suddenly we needed someone willing to make an eight-hour round trip to Windsor Locks, Connecticut.
Enter our 2026 National Rescue Sponsor, Matt King of King Foundation Sealing.
We gave Matt a call, fully expecting he would be too busy running his business to help. Instead, without hesitation, his answer was simply, "Yes."
The next day, after eight hours on the road, Matt returned with our precious cargo.
Among the animals was a little black dog with the sweetest puppy dog eyes. She sat quietly in her kennel, patiently waiting for whatever came next.
Her name was Francie, and she had no idea her life was about to change forever.
The very next day, Matt placed an adoption hold on Francie. A few days later, he brought her home, renamed her Roux in honor of her French roots, and the rest is history.
Today, Roux is living her very best life. These days, she's posted up on Lake Winnisquam - sending puposals by day, swimming laps by night, and hosting lakeside happy hours with her people (the neighborhood is always welcome to stop by for a boat ride).
Stories like Roux's are why we do what we do.
When you adopt from the New Hampshire Humane Society, you don't just change one animal's life. You also make room for the next animal who needs a safe place to land.
So, here's to our adopters, our volunteers, our supporters, our sponsors, and every person who helps make extraordinary things happen.
We hope your Fourth of July weekend is filled with laughter, celebration, and time spent with the people - and animals - you love most. Stay safe, stay cool, and thank you for being part of our compassionate community. We'll see you next month!
With gratitude,
The New Hampshire Humane Society Team
