Happy June from NHHS!
This past month, we celebrated five transports with our National Rescue Project, 79 adoptions through our Adoption Program, and 110 low-cost spay and neuter surgeries at our My Best Friend Community Pet Care Clinic, bringing the yearly total to 500 surgeries.
None of this would be possible without our incredible animal care, adoption, and medical teams. And of course, we cannot forget the constant support from our volunteers, donors, adopters, cheerleaders, and community members.
We wrapped up May with 307 volunteer hours and 196 active volunteers. We truly mean it when we say we would not be here without all of you. Thank you for standing beside us and helping pets and the people who love them.
We also held our first Community Day of the year. While the rain may have dampened the weather, it certainly didn't dampen spirits. Thanks to this program, pet food and supplies reached the organizations that support the people and pets who need them most. Community Day is powered by Chewy, which provides us with a tractor-trailer full of pet food and supplies. Our role is simple: get those resources into the hands of the community members who need them. We had 15 organizations and municipal partners from throughout the Lakes Region participate in the event.
As we head into the busiest time of year in the Lakes Region, we are looking forward to our 6th Annual Compassion Golf Tournament, now scheduled for its rain date on June 29th. We will also be participating in NH Gives, which begins at 5 PM on Tuesday, June 9th, and runs for 24 hours. If you would like to participate or are hearing about NH Gives for the first time, you can learn more at the link below!
This summer, we will have THREE themed adoption events:
🐾 June 20th – Wags and Whiskers Adoption Event
🐾 July 11th – Hot Dogs and Cool Cats Adoption Event
🐾 August 22nd – Dog Days of Summer Adoption Event
Each adoption event will feature fun surprises for adopters and goodie bags for our adoptable animals!
It Feels Good to Feel Good
All of us at NHHS strive to do what we can, whenever we can help. That is why when our medical team received a call from a fellow veterinarian about a sweet dog in need, they knew they had to step in.
The call was about a middle-aged female dog who had been diagnosed with pyometra — a severe, life-threatening bacterial infection of the uterus that only affects unspayed female dogs and cats.
Treatment requires an expensive, high-risk emergency spay surgery. Unfortunately, the procedure was financially out of reach for the owner, leaving them with an incredibly difficult decision. Thankfully, we were connected with the owner and asked if they could make the trip to the shelter the following morning at 8 AM. Although they were traveling from out of the area, they made the journey.
Their dog was able to undergo surgery with us, and thanks to our “Spay It Forward Fund,” we were able to cover the cost in full. She made a beautiful recovery, and together we were able to give both this owner and their beloved dog a second chance.
So yes - here comes our ask! We hope you will consider donating to support our important mission, including our life-saving transports, clinic, adoption program, and initiatives like our Spay It Forward fund. Our work provides care to economically fragile communities and helps ensure pets - and the people who love them - have access to the care and resources they need. If donating is not possible right now, you can still make a huge impact by following us on social media, sharing our posts, or showing a little love online. Every bit of support matters.
We hope your summer season is filled with enjoyable hikes on our beautiful local trails, ice cream for dinner, and plenty of beach days.
With gratitude,
The NHHS Team
